Harvard researchers proved that blood stem cells migrated to bone marrow specifically because melanocytes were there to provide UV shielding. The melanocyte built the shelter for the blood factory. Why? Because loose iron in blood is a 'fire hazard'. Eumelanin chelates (holds) iron stably, preventing the Fenton reaction. But pheomelanin (the OFF switch) releases iron under stress.
